[edit]February 5, 2008, the town of Gassville, Arkansas was hit by a severe tornado and virtually destroyed. Woodywoman (talk) 00:13, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
I have added that the town was sealed off due to concerns over gas leaks causing an explosion risk. I can't figure out how to put the reference in, but the reference is : http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080206/ap_on_re_us/severe_weather Also, does anyone know any more about this town, in particular, it is rare for a town to be sealed off due to gas explosion risks... and the town is called Gassville... Is the town historically related to the gas industry? Perhaps the article could be expanded? Buckethed (talk) 06:04, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- You're not the only one wondering... 210.229.27.185 (talk) 11:41, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- I live in the town next to Gassville. It was not sealed off due to gas leaks after the tornado- it was sealed off because the tornado's path went right down the main (and only) road through town- there was no electricity, more storms possible, and lots of debris on the road, so they shut down the high way and you had to go a really long way around. No where near as bad as Yahoo seemed to think. Also- while there was horrific damage, the town was by no means virtually destroyed. Maybe half a dozen businesses were destroyed, and 30 or so houses, and 100 other buildings damaged. I will try to find the article in the local paper that covers the incident and cite that instead of the now dead Yahoo article that seems to have got so much wrong. And as far as I know the only reason Gassville is called Gassvillle is because it is a small town that developed at a crossroads where there happened to be a gas station. The only truly notable building in Gassville is Baxter County's first hospital, which has been used as the Baxter County Historical Museum up until about 2 years ago when it was condemned, now it just sits empty and sad. - The article still says closed off due to risk of gas explosion (on a more positive note it seems the town is alive and well which is good!). Will
do some research at some stage to see if I can update the accuracy (it may be that they were just referring to the 'gas' station as they tend to be of flimsy construction so that probably did get damaged). Thank you for letting us know what happened - I hope your community has recovered! Buckethed (talk) 04:08, 19 October 2013 (UTC)
